When I saw this in PB catalog I got in love of it, but as you can see it is pricy, so I got the idea I could make one for my children. I draw an sketch and use PVC pipes for the frame, and the fabric was from the $1.95 section of Fabric.com I use embroideries from here, here, here and emblibrary.com.

I love to see my children playing with it. They love it.

Candle Mat

I started this mat last year and I just got finished a couple of weeks ago. I still have to quilt another mat an two table runners with the same design. I wonder if this will sell on Etsy? Darlette's Christmas present for me

She probably thinks that I did not like my Christmas present, but I was waiting for permanent ink to show you what she made me.
First she made beautiful paintings that she turn to cards and she gave me some as stationary I just love them. Also she made me this amazing stamp.
I will be using it to sign my projects.
I do not have much time I have been quilting for the last few days and no way near finishing.

Sewing Machine Mat a Tutorial

I saw a mat for a sewing machine that I like and the lady that had it told me it was just so easy to make so here it is:

I modified, but I will give you the instructions she gave me.

You will only need 1 yard of fabric.
1 Fold the fabric with the right side facing each other sew it all over leaving an opening of about 5 to 6 inches to turn.
2 Press to set the stitch and turn the fabric inside out.
3 pick the corners (I do it with a pin)
4 Press and top stitch around. I press with the seams not at the edge so the seam goes to one side and then when you press on the edge it is easy to have a clean press like the second picture down.
5 You will have a piece that measures about 22'' wide by 36" long.
6 Fold the end of the fabric to measure 7 1/4"and press.
7 Top stitch the sides and then decide how many divisions you want mark them and top stitch them (remember to reinforce the stitch when you start) I went for three separations.
and there you have it.
I hope this tutorial was helpful since I realized that there are a gazillion tutorials for bias tape. anyway.

Easy way to make Bias Tape – Tutorial-

I have these two bias makers. They work okay, I prefer the pink kind but it just works when you make the 18mm size. Then one day a friend taught me an easy way to make bias tape without fancy gadgets.

Tengo estos dos aparatitos para hacer bies. Funcionan bien (prefiero el rosa) pero se limitan al tamaño que pueden hacer (18mm y 25mm). Un dia una amiga me enseno como hacer el bies sin ninguno de estos aparatitos.

NOTE; this is the way I learned how to do it (I am self thought). You may have a better way to do it.

NOTA: esta es la forma en la que yo hago el bies (aprendí solita). Talvez tu tengas una mejor forma de hacerlo.

First of all you need to calculate how much bias you’ll need. Measure the perimeter of your quilt (each size) so if you quilt is 60” x 70” you will add 60 + 60 + 70 + 70 = 260” add 10” for a total of 270” that will help to sew it on the quilt.

To calculate how much fabric you’ll need I calculate the following:

Considering the width of fabric as 42” or 110cm and the width of the desired bias (in this case 1 ¾ this is the width I usually do my bias) I divide 270/42 It will give me how many strips I’ll need for a total of 6.42 ~ 7 strips times the width of the bias (1.75) = 12.25” Rounding up we’ll need 13” in other words:

Sides of quilt A+B+C+D= E Total perimeter of quilt

E+ 10= F Total inches of bias needed

F/42 (width of fabric) = G Number of strips

G*(width of bias strip) = inches of fabric you need

Lo primero que necesitas es calcular cuanto bies necesitas. Mide el perímetro de tu acolchado (cada lado). Si tu acolchado mide 150 cm por 180 cm vas a sumar 150 + 150+ 180+180= 660 cm agrega 25 cm mas para un total de 685 cm esos 25 cm te ayudaran a terminar de agregar el bies al acolchado.

Pata calcular cuanta tela necesitamos vamos a calcular lo siguiente:

Considerando que la tela mide 110 cm de ancho y el ancho del bies 4.5 cm (este es el ancho que yo normalmente utilizo) dividimos 685/110 que nos dara la cantidad de tiritas que es 6.22 lo redondeamos a 7 tiritas por el ancho de las tiritas (4.5cm) = 31.5cm redondeado 32cm.

So with your measurements done, cut the strips in my case 1 ¾. Sew all you pieces on the width right sides together and press open the seams. (I do this to diminish bulk).

Con todas las medidas calculadas, cortamos tiras de 4.5 cm (en mi caso) coser las tiras a de la parte delgada con los derechos juntos y planchar las puntadas abiertas (esto es para que no tengamos mucho bulto)

Next finger press on half just the first few inches.

Despues con las uñas marcar la tela a la mitad.

Press the fold.

Planchar el doblez (unos 10 cm)

Open and again fold it the edges towards the middle.

Abrir otra vez, doblar la tela hacia el centro por los dos lados.

And press, this is just to the first few inches

Planchar, solo unos cuantos cm.

First on your ironing table (I cannot do this on my small Teflon cover tableL) pin from edge to edge as shown.

En el burro de lanchar (o tabla) Pinchar como se puestra en la foto justo a la orilla del bies.

Make sure it does not have room to make the bias wider (I hope the pictures are self explanatory

Y Pinchar a la otra orilla del bies asegurarse de que no sea mas ancho para que el bies sea uniforme todo lo ancho. (espero que las fotos sean mas explicitas que mi explicación)

Pull just enough tape to have the iron on and enough so you can pull the end with your fingers (sorry for the crappy pick). Keep pulling and help feed the tape under the iron with your other hand (I usually do not need to press the iron I just leave it there and pull the tape.

Jalar suficiente bies para que la plancha pueda ser puesta y suficiente para jalar (lado derecho) con la mano. (Lo siento por la mala foto). Seguir jalando y pasando el bies por debajo de la plancha. Ayuderse con la otra mano para que el bien siga pasando por el pin y la plancha.

And there you have it Bias tape to be bind. (Sorry, I did not make lots of this bias it was for the sewing machine cover top)

Y aquí lo tienen bies listo para poner (lo siento no hice mucho bies de esta tela pues la utilice para la cubierta de mi maquina de coser.) Espero que este tutorial haya sido de ayuda si tienen algún comentario o pregunta no duden en preguntarme.

Sewing Machine Cover

Have this happened to you? You want to make something very special but you are afraid you are going to hate it if you do. This is what happened to me every time I thought about making a sewing machine cover. so I thought and I thought and the idea came in black and white and later evolved to this:
I got the bunny Hill fabric as a scrap piece it was enough to do this. I just love it! with all my previous circle quilting practice on my last project I was kind of confident to try to do this flowers like Laurraine Yuyama that I love. Then as I was looking on her Flickr site i found that by cover has some of her influence. To each flower I added a button to make it different.
I do not think I will get tired of it, but if i do, I just turn it outside in and I'll get a totally different look.

Utility Fabrics

The other day I was at Joann's and I "found" the utility fabrics section, I knew some of the things they had there but not all. I discovered that they have Teflon fabric for ironing boards. I have been wanting to redo my small ironing board, so when I "found" the fabric I decided this was the time to do it.
I do not have the before picture but I only recovered the board I added some cushion to it with some fleece and it works great.
El otro dia estabe en el Joann's y que me "encuentro" la seccon de telas utilitarias, sabia de algunas de las cosas que tenian pero no todas. descubri que tienen la tela de teflon para los burros de planchar. Desde hace algun tiempo queria cambiar la tela de mi pequeno burro pero nada que lo hacia y cuando vi esta tela supe que era el momento de hacer algo por mi burro.
No tengo la foto de antes pero solo la recubri y agrege un poco mas de cojin con tela polar que tenia y eso ayudo a que no estubiera tan plano.I used some upholstery staples and that was all. Maybe you already found this section, if not go ahead and find some utility material for your next project.
Use grapas de tapiceria y eso fue todo. Talvez ustedes ya encontraron esta seccion, si no vayan a ver que se encuentran para su proximo projecto.

Tree skirt re-do

It was one of the first projects I blogged about it was this tree skirt I made in 2008 (you can find it here). I love the stitchery, but I hated the quilting.
Este fue uno de mis primeros trabajos que mostre en el blog en el 2008 (Pueden encontrarlo aqui). Me encanto el bordado, pero no me gusto el acolchado.
Back then I wasn't skillful about free motion quilting so I did my best but obviously it wasn't enough. Last year I thought about quilting it, but didn't happened. This year as I was putting all the Christmas decorations away I decided it was it so I totally undid the quilting and the finish which wasn't even a bias or even a great finish and I open the skirt for those times when we'll get a natural tree.
En esos tiempos no estaba tan familiarisada con el free motion quilting asi es que hice lo mejor que pude pero oviamente no fue suficiente. El ano pasado pense en hacerle cambios pero no lo hice. Este ano al estar guardando todo lo de navidad decidi que este era el momento de hacerlo, asi es que lo desmonte todo junto con el intento de bies qie ni era bies y lo acolche. Tambien lo abri para que pudiera ser usado con arboles naturales.
Needless to say that I am very pleased with the end result. I love the quilting which gave me a great curve practice and I really enjoy it. I started quilting from the top and I when gradually down to the lower part of the skirt, I also did not cut the skirt until it was all quilted and that help to be more stable and manageable. Now the stitchery can be appreciated better and each stitchery pops by its own.
No es necesario decir que me encanto el resultado. Me gusto el acolchado que me dio buena practica de circulos. Empece a acolchar de arriba en forma circular hasta llegar abajo eso ayudo a que estubiera mas estable. La avertura la hice despues de acolcharlo y eso ayudo a que fuera mas manejable. Ahora el bordado se puede apreciar mejor.

Not so good of a Day

Yesterday wasn't my day at all. Doing house work going up and down stairs one of those trips I badly landed and my hips and leg hurts. After that I decided to slow down and finish working on my quilt. I did finished the free motion quilting and I switched to add the bias when I switched something happened and my sewing machine jammed. Today Hubby send it to the doctor and it will be back in a week. He called me and said that he arranged for me to have a temporary sewing machine from the shop. I am happy and sad. I am so attached to my sewing machine... silly? I do not think so, when you love what you do you really get attached to your tools.

Ayer no fue mi dia. Estaba trabajando en las labores del hogar, subiendo y bajando las escaleras cuando termine en el piso, me cai y me duele mis caderas y una de mis piernas. Despues decidi tomare el resto del dia mas tranquilo y me puse a terminar un acolchado. Termine el free motion parte y cuando cambie mi maquina para hacer el bies algo paso que mi maquina se trabo y nada que se mueve. Totalmente debastada, lo bueno es que mi esposo llevo mi maquina a que la repararan, estara alli por una semana. Lo bueno es que mi esposo me traera una maquina temporal.

Felt Embroidery Cookies

Darlette made this beautiful felt embroidery cookies for the girls.
Alana got this cute cookies with this cute tea bag. Darlette put them in actual cookie containers and look very cute.
Grace got a gingerbread man cookie set ready to decorate and have lots of fun pretending.

Funny thing is that my girls love to bake they prefer to make cookies and this year they helped my with our neighborhood presents.

Teacher's Gift

Did you have a nice Christmas? We did, our little family enjoy each other and we had a wonderful time. Now I can show you all the things I made. I'll start with the Teacher's gift I made for Alana's class.
Back in August when I visited Darlette we went to a quilt shop and I saw mug organizers. I asked for the pattern but they said they got them from a magazine and they did not had the magazine anymore, so I looked online and I found this tutorial.
I like the organizer so much that I decided to make one for me too. It really works quite nice. One thing I did is I went to a Thrift store and got the biggest mugs I could find. I got 3 for the teacher, the aid and me.
I kind of practice my free motion quilting skills and I made snowflakes. totally inspired by a Christmas wrapping. too bad it does not show at all on the mug but non the less great practice. Here is a picture of a detail.

Darlette made this beautiful doll beds to give her girls for Christmas. She just show them to me and I ask her if I could share with you. They are just beautiful!
Darlette hizo estas lindas camitas para muneca para regalar a sus ninas en la Navidad. Me acaba de mostras las camitas y le pregunte si podia mostrarselas y dijo que si, creo que estan simplemente lindas.
She made the mattess, Sheets and quilt I think they are adorable.
Ella hizo los colchones, savanas y colchita, estan adorables.

A funny story is that when we were in middle school I took wood shop class and Darlette Accounting. Last week mom call me and asked me what I was doing I said "doing the books for Hubby" then she called Darlette and mom asked the same question, Darlette answered "woodwork." Mom laugh the accountant is doing woodwork and the carpenter is doing accounting. Darlette clarify, "yes but Erika studied accounting in College, and I am just trying first time." I think she did great considering it is her first time.
Una anegdota sobre esto es que cuando estudiabamos en la Escuela Secundaria yo estudie carpinteria y ella contabilidad. el otro dia mama hablo y me pregunto que que hacia y le dije "haciendole la contabilidad a mi Esposo", despues ella le llamo a Darlette y le pregunto lo mismo y ella contesto "haciendo las camitas para mis hijas" mi mama se rio y dijo "mira la carpintera esta haciendo contabilidad y la contadora carpinteria" Darlette le aclaro, "Si pero Erika estudio contabilidad en el Collegio y yo apenas estoy aprendiendo carpinteria" En fin creo que le han quedado hermosas las camitas.

Anyway as I said I am working on Hubby's business and I haven't done much crafting that I can show you right now. Hopefully soon I'll be free.

Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

Okay it is totally unrelated topic, but have you ever tried home made Buttermilk Ranch Dressing? well it is delicious. I have follow the girls of Our Best Bites and I love all their recipes and besides the fact that they are ady and actually taste good their recipes have simple everyday ingredients. I love cooking and besides crafts books I buy recipe books. I got the Rachel Ray ones and I had to donate them they are great recipes unfortunately no one recipe I found that I could have some or all the ingredients plus some of the ingredients I did not even know where to buy them. Anyway visit this blog is great and the ranch is to die for.

Believe Banner

How ironic my last project took me 3 years to finished and this only 3 hours. Today it was super Saturday in my Church and we had several projects going on. I choose the banner. The sample had the Sweetwater girls, but since I am doing my Christmas decorations more focus on what Christmas is really about. I decided to go with a different line of fabric, I went with Fa la la la la, from Moda French General. At first I was afraid I wont like it but it is official I am a French General gal. I think they fit my style. I just love it and the fabric is not to Chistmas-y.

Que ironico mi ultimo projecto de ayer me tomo 3 anos en terminar y este solo tres horas. Hoy hubo un Super Sabado en mi Iglesia e hicimos varios projectos, yo decidi hacer este banner, es super sencillo. El ejemplo que tenian estaba hecho con la linea de las chicas de Sweetwater pero como he decidido hacer mis adornos mas enfocados en lo que la navidad realmente representa decidi irme por la linea de las chicas de French General, su linea de navidad Fa la la la la. Al principio no estaba muy segura si me hiba a gustar pero ya es oficial me encanta su estilo y es el mio. La tela no es muy navidena pero funciona perfectamente bien. Por cierto aveces no tengo el tiempo de escribir el blog en Ingles y Espanol y tomando en cuenta que tengo un traductor en uno de los lados... bueno gracias por comprenderme.

After 3 years or so...

I really don't remember when Darlette made this for me. she just said "finish them, they're almost done (half of them)" well today I finally finished them. It took me about an hour How bad I am. I have a few UFO's in a box that I am determine to finish. This is one of them. I have presents that are part of that box, sorry I will show them after Christmas. for now here are my snowman finish.
I add the yarn for hanging and put a button on the bottom like the pumpkins I made before (the first set was for my mother in law two years ago) my set was done just a month ago... Anyway in this case I added the buttons on the back because Darlette did not leave much space for the front.
Also you see one with pon-pon trim, she made that and I do not have any so I just left it in there.
I will add them to the christmas Tree decorations and leave them on the shelf for January winter decor.

Nativity Wall Hanger

I made this wall hanger with the idea of having a window into that sacred scene when our Savior was born. I tried to buy a panel, but I really did not find anything, so I decided to make it by myself.
Hice este acolchado para la pared conla idea de tener una ventana a la magica y tan especial escena del nacimiento de nuestro Salvador. Trate de conseguir un panel pero no encontre nada, asi es que decidi hacerlo yo misma.

I started by looking for a nativity siluet. Then I try to design some kind of fame or window looking design. I got some ideas at Debbie Mumm's books I have for reference. Empeze buscando una silueta de un nacimiento. Despues trate de disenar un marco o ventana para la silueta. Encontre inspiracion en uno de los libros de Debbie Mumm.
I used Reindeer Games by Sandy Gervais. I loved the line and I wanted more the problem was that I got the fabric in a place quite far away from me and I thought my local Shops will have some. The surprising thing was that none of the 3 shops I visit didn't even received the line It was sold out before left the factory! Crazy. Use la linea de telas Reindeer Games de Sandy Gervais. La linea esta muy linda y queria mas el problema es que la compre en un lugar a donde casi no visito y pense que en las tiendas que siempre voy encontraria facilmente. Cual ha sido mi sorpresa que en las tres tiendas que fui nisiquiera la recibieron resulta que se habia agotado desde antes de que saliera de la fabrica!
I wonder why they make limited production. Some lines are really successful and I wish they could reprint them.
Me pregunto por que hacen una produccion limitada. Algunas lineas son muy populares y desearia que las reproducieran otra vez.
The start print is from Benatrex fabrics at first I was afraid it could be to bright but it really turn out great.
La tela de estrellas es de Benatrex, primero no estaba segura si estaba muy brillante pero ya despues me usto como se ve con el resto de las telas.
The quilting process was tedious I wanted to have a special design but it was hard to come with the whole combination of designs. I stipple the sky, I stitch in the ditch the red frame, I "X" quilt the green of the frame border, stitch in the dich the black border and I did some holly and berry designs for the last border.
El proceso de acolchado fue un poco tedioso, queria tener un diseno especial pero me fue dificil combinar todos laos disenos. el cielo fue stipple, acolche a la orilla de toda la tela roja que hace el marco y la parte verde hice un simple X. para el marco negro tambien lo acolche en la orilla y para el ultimo borde decidi unas hojas santas con moras.
I love the fact that Sandy makes bias look fabric that I do not have to cut on the bias yay!
The quilt mesures 24"X 26" and the blue center 11"x13".
Me gusto que Sandy hace tela para lucir como bies asi no tengo que cortar la tela al bies y que bueno no me gusta ese proceso. El acolchado mide 61 cm por 66 cm yla parte azul 28 cm por 33 cm.

A very special Gift

We have an old friend that has been a widower for several years, his wife was a fine seamstress. Our friend decided to clean his house and brought me a gift, the kind of gift I love.

Fabric Pinecones

A few weeks ago I found this tutorial that i really like. For some reason I lost the link and searching for it I found several more tutorials but this really was the best.
I made one (not shown) with Christmas fabric it turned out cute and I used some cheap material from Joann's. Then I gather all my pumpkin color scraps mix them up and I came up with this three beauties. I love the way they turned and how elegant they feel. I am not really sure how much material I used but it seems like a quarter of a yard will do per each 3 inch balls.
Hace algunas semanas me encontre este tutorial y me gusto mucho. Por alguna razon perdi el enlace y buscando el tutorial me encontre muchos tutoriales similares pero nada como este. Hice uno (no foto) con tela de navidad que quedo lindo, use tela de la de Joann. Como queria algo mas para decorar con colores del otono busque todos los retazitos de tela que tenia de color calabaza; los mezcle y estas tres pinitas salieron. Me gusto como lucen y que elegantes se ven. No estoy segura cuanta tela use pero parece que es como un cuarto de yarda.

Vanilla Extract

I have been quite busy this summer and right now we are enjoying Monika and her family visiting us. Lots of Japanese cooking (she is half Japanese) I learn a lot and talking to her she shared a way to make my own vanilla extract, so I thought to share it here.
This is according to her friend Sarah F. K.
Vanilla is way easy to make. You just need vodka (at least 40%) and vanilla beans. I ordered bourbon Madagascar beans from amazon, and have not been disappointed! I've found different recipes say different numbers of beans, so I just used 15 beans, cut them in thirds and put them in the vodka bottle. Dump a little out first so the beans have room. Put somewbere relatively dark or wrap the bottle up and let it do it's thing for at least 2 months, shaking the bottle a couple times a week. Use a coffee filter when you pour it (into smaller bottles if you want) because of the vanilla seeds. And the same as they say wine gets better with age, so does vanilla. :)

Miss G turn 4 this weekend. Last Friday I started sewing a Hat for her using this tutorial. I bought enough material to make for all girls using Sweet Water fabric; the other material was a repurpuse a kaki skirt that I ruined with a highlighter. Miss G saw the material and asked me "mommy are you making me a dress too" So I felt very obligated to make her a dress. so here is the result:

Okay Darlette made the dress like month and a half ago right? I started the same week but I just finish making (2) them last Saturday night just on time for church yesterday. It was hard to take pictures so I got this only okay one.
Se acuerdan que Darlette hizo este vestido hace como un mes y medio? Bueno yo lo empece la misma semana y apenas termine de hacerlos (2) el Sabado en la noche justo para el Domingo para ir a la capilla. Fue dificil tomarles fotos a las hijas pero logre rescatar esta.
Since this was my first sewing for long time I can say I missed my sewing machine so much and just working with fabric. My problem is that my new sewing room is not calling me. So I took my sewing machine and everything else that cones with it upstairs to the kitchen. I really was in heaven. :)

Hi, Can you believe is June already? Time just flies, besides that have you seen the spring this year? We haven't. Today on the news they said that May was the wet-est May ever recorded in Utah! and not only in here but all around the US the weather has been cold and wet.
Hola, Pueden creer que ya estamos en Junio? El tiempo vuela ademas de que no hemos tenido primavera este ano. Hoy en las noticias mencionaron que Mayo a sido el mes con mas presipitacion en record. Y no solo eso en el resto del pais el clima ha estado todo raro.

We start planting our garden at the beginning of May. We planted tomatoes some bell peppers and jalapenos. Later we add the cucumbers, zucchini, and tons of tomatillos for green salsa (hubby's favorite) the last to plant were the cantaloupe and the watermelon. with an additio of 24 more tomato plants from nice neighbors. :) That has kept me busy not to mention all the rest of the garden.
Empezamos a plantar nuestro jardin a principios de Mayo. Empezamos con jitomates (tomates), pimientos morron y jalapenos. Despues le agregamos pepinos, calabazas bastantes plantas de tomatillos para haver salsa verde que el la favorita de mi esposo. por ultimo agregamos otros tipos de chiles y melones y sandias ha y terminamos plantando 24 plantas de jitomate extras que unos vecinos nos dieron. :)

The news mention that on Memorial Day (Monday) many places in the state had snow. People in Alta (sky resort) were having a few new inches of powder!. I hope summer can come soon. The plants appreciate the rain, but farmers and ranchers around the state surely don't need their lands under water. Please pray for those in flood danger zones. As hot weather arises the snow in the mountains defrost and keeps the state in emergency flood alert.
En las noticias mencionaron que el Lunes pasado en muchos lugares del estado nevo. Gente en Alta (un resort para esquiar) tubieron nieve fresca!. Espero que el verano llegue pronto. Las pantas aprecian la lluvia, pero los granjeros y los rancheros en el estado por seguro no necesitan sus lugares de cultivo bajo el agua. Porfavor tengan en sus oraciones a aquellos que viven en zonas de riezgo. Entre mas caliente este los bancos de nieve en las montanas empezaran a derretirse mas rapido y causaran muchos problemas para los que viven cerca de los rios y en zonas de cultivo.

Last time Darlette came to visit she asked me if I know of a place where she could buy organic meat or grass grown beef. At that time I couldn't give her an answer. Yesterday Hubby brought a flyer advertising Roberts Ranch I went to check it out and found out that is part of the CSA farms project to bring organic foods to people.
I also found this video PBS documentary Food Inc. and Nation wide you can find local farmers at local farmers.org great place to find quality food.
On the other hand and talking about gardening. I planted all my tomato plants (13) Bell peppers (7) Jalapenos (6) zucchini, and spaghetti squash. I hope to plant the rest when the weather gets better.

A couple of weeks ago Heidi and Finn had a BOGO sale and Darlette and I bought some cute patterns for our girls. Darlette made the Sweet Wrap Reversible Dress and here is how beautiful it turn out. Mine is still in the making. I cannot believe how long it takes me to finish things now days anyway I am almost done with the first one to later show you. Many years ago I was the manager of a college cafeteria. I loved that job I help me to know many people and work with students from all over the world. That very thing made my job sometimes challenging because of the communication issues. The most challenging issue was to make bread. We made our bread every day but consistency was hard when you had different people baking every day.
Hace algunos anos trabaje como administradora de una cafeteria en una universidad. Me encantaba mi trabajo pues tenia la oportunidad de conocer muchas personas y trabajar con estudiantes de todo el mundo. Esta misma oportunidad presentaba dificultades cuando uno trata de comunicarse y dar instrucciones. Lo mas dificil era hacer el pan. Nosotros haciamos pan diario pero aveces no era muy consistente.
We had the same instructions and we thought we all follow them the same, but when asking them what they exactly did it was a different story. Anyway, I learn to make bread or so I thought. for several years I had this problem that my bread wasn't rising and it came always flat. I almost always tried different recipes; then a few months ago while reading instruction for a recipe I discover my mistake. I let my bread rise on top of the old stove which has the gas pilot on all the time. Well you do not let your bread be over a 115 F area while rising. I was killing the yeast! dah!
Teniamos las mismas instrucciones y pensabamos que seguiamos lo mismo, pero al preguntar que era lo que exactamente hacian se convertia en otra historia. En fin, Aprendi a hacer pan, o eso pense. Por muchos anos tube el problema de que mi pan no crecia se quedaba todo apachurrado, casi siempre probaba una receta diferente, pero hace algunos meses cuando leia una receta decia que dejaramos subir la masa en un lugar en donde no pasara 46 C. bueno pues me di cuenta de que estaba matando la levadura pues dejaba mi pan crecer arriba de la estufa con el piloto de gas encendido y pasaba de 46 grados.

Well, Now I do not have problems with my bread and the other day I sign up to bring dinner rolls for a Church activity. The rolls looked wonderful. I just wish I had the pattern to make this beautiful basket (set of 3) that a good friend gave me.
Bueno, ahora ya no tengo problemas con mi pan asi es que el otro dia me apunte para llevar roles a una actividad de mi Iglesia. Los roles se veia muy bien, solo desearia saber como hacer esta canasta (set de 3) que una amiga me regalo.

If your vegetable gardening is limited by insufficient space or an unsuitable area, consider raising fresh, nutritious, homegrown vegetables in containers. A window sill, a patio, a balcony or a doorstep will provide sufficient space for a productive mini-garden. Problems with soilborne diseases, nematodes or poor soil conditions can be easily overcome by switching to a container garden. Ready access to containers means that pest management is easier. Container vegetable gardening is a sure way to introduce children to the joys and rewards of vegetable gardening.

Si el cultivo de verduras es limitado por la falta de espacio o el área es inadecuada, considera la posibilidad de cultivar vegetales frescos, nutritivos en tu propio hogar utilizando contenedores. Crop Selection

Almost any vegetable that will grow in a typical backyard garden will also do well as a container-grown plant. Vegetables that are ideally suited for growing in containers include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, green onions, beans, lettuce, squash, radishes and parsley. Pole beans and cucumbers also do well in this type of garden, but they do require considerably more space because of their vining growth habit.

Growing Media

Any growing media (soil) must provide water, nutrients, and a physical support in order to grow healthy plants. A good soil must also drain well. Synthetic or soilless mixes are well suited for vegetable container gardening and may be composed of sawdust, wood chips, peat moss, perlite, or vermiculite. These are free of disease and weed seeds, hold moisture and nutrients but drain well and are lightweight. Many synthetic soil mixes such as Jiffy Mix®, Bacto®, Promix®, and Jiffy Pro® are available at garden centers.

Containers

Almost any type of container can be used for growing vegetable plants. For example, try using bushel baskets, drums, gallon cans, tubs, tires or wooden boxes. The size of the container will vary according to the crop selection and space available. Pots from 6 to 10 inches in size are satisfactory for green onion, parsley and herbs. For most vegetable crops such as tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, you will find that 5 gallon containers are the most suitable size, while 1 to 2 gallon containers are best for chard and dwarf tomatoes. Smaller container sizes are appropriate for herbs, lettuce, and radish crops. They are fairly easy to handle and provide adequate space for root growth.

Container materials are either porous or nonporous. Glazed, plastic, metal, and glass containers are nonporous. Regardless of the type or size of container used it must drain adequately for successful yields. Adding about 1 inch of coarse gravel in the bottom of the container will improve drainage. The drain holes work best when they are located along the side of the container, about ¼ to ½ inch from the bottom.

Seeding and Transplanting

Vegetables that can be easily transplanted are best suited for container culture. Transplants may be purchased from local nurseries or can be grown at home. Seeds can also be germinated in a baking pan, plastic tray, pot, cup, or even a cardboard milk carton. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then fill the container with the soil described above and cover most vegetable seed with ¼ inch to ½ inch of soil to insure good germination. Keep the soil moist watering once a day. Using peat pellets or peat pots which are available from nursery supply centers is another method. Seeds can also be germinated on plates placing the seeds between damp paper towels. Check the seeds each day and wet the paper towels each day until tiny roots appear, then place them in the pan, tray, cup, with the ¼ inch to ½ inch of soil.

The seed should be started in a warm area that receives sufficient sunlight about 4 to 8 weeks before you plan to transplant them into the final container. Most vegetables should be transplanted into containers when they develop their first two to three true leaves. Transplant the seedlings carefully to avoid injuring the young root system. (See Table 2 for information about different kinds of vegetables.)

Fertilization

Available fertilizers will be either time-release or water soluble. Time-release fertilizer is mixed with the potting media at planting time. Osmocote® is a pelleted time-release fertilizer with 14-14-14 formulation. Water soluble fertilizers, on the other hand, are added to water and used when plants begin to grow actively. Peters® 20-20-20 or Miracle Gro® 15-30-15 are two examples sold in most garden centers.

The easiest way to add fertilizer to plants growing in containers is to prepare a nutrient solution and then pour it over the soil mix. There are many good commercial fertilizer mixes available to make nutrient solutions. Always follow the application directions on the label. You can make a nutrient solution by dissolving 2 cups of a complete fertilizer such as 10-20-10, 12-24-12, or 8-16-8 in 1 gallon of warm tap water. This mixture is highly concentrated and must be diluted before it can be used to fertilize the plants. To make the final fertilizing solution, mix 2 tablespoons of the concentrated solution in 1 gallon of water.

If you use transplants, begin watering with the nutrient solution the day you set them out. If you start with seed, apply only tap water to keep the soil mix moist enough until the seeds germinate. Once the plants emerge, begin using the nutrient solution.

Watering

Proper watering is essential for a successful container garden and one watering per day is usually adequate. However, poor drainage will slowly kill the plants. If the mix becomes water-logged, the plants will die from lack of oxygen. Avoid wetting the foliage of plants since wet leaves will encourage plant diseases. Remember to use the nutrient solution for each watering except for the weekly leaching when you will use tap water.

Water-holding gels are becoming popular for use in container gardening. These starch-based gels are called hydrogels. They absorb at least 100 times their weight in water and slowly release that water into the soil as it dries. To be effective, they should be incorporated in the soil mix before planting.

Fruit bearing plants, such as cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant need the most sun of all. One major advantage to gardening in containers is that you can place the vegetables in areas where they can receive the best possible growing conditions.

Support

Large plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans and pole peas need support so they do not fall over. Three-foot stakes can be put into the soil of the container near the edges (or near the center of the container if using only one stake). Tie the plant stalks loosely to the stakes so it won’t fall down. Use a thick twine or small rope, do not use string as it will cut the plant stalk. Metal or wire cages can also be used to hold the plant upright.

Contact your local county Extension agent for the latest information on disease and insect control on vegetable plants.

I have been working on this table runner since January you can see I blog about it here I started quilting one of them, but I stopped because of the move. So a few days ago I finally found it in one of my many boxes and the first thing I see is that the center of my circular feathers are totally horrible and I hate them! then the question came what to do? and I remember Leah's post about "don't fear the ripper"
He estado trabajando en este camino de mesa desde Enero, pueden ver que hable de el aqui. Empeze a acolchar uno, pero tuve que parar por lo de la mudanza. Asi es que hace algunos dias finalmente lo encontre entre las tantas cajas y lo primero que vi fueron los centros de las plumas circulares que hice y que me quedaron horribles! y la pregunta era que hacer? Recorde que Leah puso un articulo acerca de esto aqui.
So the big decision came and I ripped all the circular feathers. It took me two nights but I did it. I thing I will do this design instead.

Asi es que tome la desicion de despntar todo el acolchdo de las plumas circulares. Me tomo dos noches pero al fin lo logre, creo que hare este diseno en su lugar.

Inspired by PB Kids I made this Chair Backers for my Girls .
Inspirada por PB Kids Hice estos bolsas para el respaldo de las sillas de mis hijas.

I was looking for a nice green shade of felt, but all I found was not cute enough for Easter so I looked at the Home Decor section at Joann and I found this 45" polka dot fabric that my helper (Miss C) loved.
Primero busque por fieltro verde pastel pero no encontre ninguno que me gustara asi que en la seccion de telas para decoracion del hogar encontre esta tela de 45" con lunares en tonos pastel que mi querida alludanta le encanto.

To make 3 you will need:
1 yard Felt or home decor weight fabric 45"
1 yard fusible thermolam plus felt from pellon
Ric rac trim or any other trim ebmelishments you want to use.
If you have an embroidery machine a nice good quality embroidery. I love this from emblibrary it is one of my favorites. Stitcheries can be used too.
If not, any Easter fabric for applique will do.

Card stock to make a template.

For the baking cut a piece of fusible felt using your fabric. remember too have the fusible part right side up touching the wrong side of your fabric. and fuse.

With the left over of your fabric cut 2" stripes to make the stripes to hold on the chairs. depends on your chair is going to be the length of your stripes. You need 4 for each one. Sew it together and turn it out and iron. Fold in one of the ends an sew the ends. Now you can make a button hole.

Yo puse los nombres de mis hijas enla pieza pequena de arriba de mi bolsa haciendolo con el metodo de acolchado libre en la maquina de coser cara que estubiera alli pero que no fuera un foco de atencion de mi bolsa. tambien lo puedes hacer a mano.
Despues doble hacia abajo la parte de arriba de la pieza de la bolsita y la cosi para asegurarla.

Ahora es tiempo de armar la bolsita. Primero se acomoda la parte de atraz con la tela hacia arriba y se aseguran las tiras con alfileres.
Then, the Pocket piece right side down.
Despues encima se pone la pieza de enfrente de la bolsa con el bordado o aplicacion boca abajo asegurandola con alfileres.
And finally on top the little top piece of the egg. Pin and sew all the way around about 3/4".
Finalmente se acomoda la pieza pequena de la parte de arriba del huevo con la parte de enfrente boca abajo. asegurala con alfileres y coce todo alrededor con una costura de 1cm de ancho a la orilla.
Clip all the curves.
Corta las curvas.
Now turn the top first and with the help of a paper folding tool help yourself to push the fabric. First I use my iron with stem once and then I push the fabric from inside and then I press again until all the seams are nice even and out.
Ahora bolte primero la pieza pequena de arriba del huevo y con la ayuda de un doblador de papel empuja por dentro la tela, primero usa tu plancha con vapor y pasala una vez y asi caliente empuja la tela por dentro con tu doblador de papel asi hasta que loda la costura quede pareja y lo mas afuera que se pueda.
Then I turn the pocket and do the same process.
Ahora boltea la parte de la bolsa y haz el mismo procedimiento.
Because I have a raw edge on the top of my top I fuse a piece of fusible net to my fabric so it will stay in place. I didn't lined my backer because I didn't had enough of the same fabric, and it is just a decoration that is going to be on the chair for a month, And originally it was suppose to be all felt.
Como tenemos una orilla que no esta escondida usaremos un pedazo de deta fusible para unir la tela con el pellon y mantenerla en su lugar. En esta ocacion no puse forro completo a este proyecto porque en primera no tenia suficiente tela para la pieza y en segundo lugar porque el proposito de la bolsa es solo decoracion que durara un mes en la silla, finalmente la ide iriginal era hacerlo con puro fieltro.
So now I took the backer to the chair and mark the place where I sew the buttons.
Ahora agarras tu bolsita y la mides en tu silla para marcar donde pondras los botones paqra asegurar la bolsa a la silla.

Ya terminamos, ahora lo que necesitas es llenar tus bolsitas con mucho amor y regalitos para tus pequenitos o tus nietos esta proxima Pascua.

What makes this b-day the best?

That was the question my hubby asked me after my answer Saturday night. And it wasn't because he gave me an expensive gift, or I had a birthday party, or anything like that. It was because I got the best thing, love from the people I care about.
Every thing started with this...
A few days before He and the girls started acting kind of suspicious. suspicious cute. At first Grace came to me and we had a little conversation like this:

Grace: Mammy, I just want to tell you that we do not have a birthday present for you, daddy bought some chocolates for you but he try them and they were all bad so he throw them to the garbage.
Me: ok (now I know what is my gift) it's ok Grace. I am sure daddy will have something for my birthday.

Two days before hubby came with this (see pic) singing Happy pre-birthday to you. I thought it was crazy and cute.

The next day Grace comes again says kind of the same thing about the chocolates.
me: It is ok Grace Daddy gave me a can with chocolates last night thank you.
Grace: oh no mammy, there is more chocolates for you more!
Hubby: Grace quiet is a surprise.
Alana: we are not planning any thing mammy, we are just planning... Kaylee's birthday (which was a month ago)
me: ok (thinking this is cute)

So until my birthday I had little people and hubby "secretly" planning mommy's birthday. That was the best thing to me. To see the excitement form Alana and Grace and Making tons of pictures and gifts for mommy.

Then my dearest sister send me this beautiful painting. Maybe you do not know this but she has been painting since we were in High School and usually making and giving away her creations, since that time I have asked her for a painting and finally it's here. It was worth the wait. She is so talented I wished I could have a bit of her talent.

I also receive lots of phone calls from family and friends and emails. That made the day so special. and since I was so sick with the cold just a low key birthday celebration was the perfect thing for me.

Isn't she awesome? here is the "original" model.

Art Gallery B-Day Party

Last Saturday we had an Art Gallery party for Cosey. We ate a rainbow of fruits, cake and cookies.

El pasado sabado fue la fiesta de Galeria de Arte para Cosey. Comimos un arcoiris de frutas, pastel y galletas.

We had different stations to do art projects.
1st. a self portrait.

Tubimos diferentes mesas de actividades para hacer diferentes tipos de proyectos.
Primero un Autoretrato.

2nd a Watercolor
segundo, una acuarela .

To be safe I made an apron for each of the guest with their names embroidered. It was part of the favors.

Para estar segura hice delantales para cada una de las invitadas con su nombre bordado y como parte de los regalitos que les dimos.

3rd a clay sculpture of a Bird

Tercero hicimos una escultura de un pajarito.

4th we had face painting and 5th we took pictures with an old frame.

Cuarto les pintamos la cara y quinto usamos un marco y sacamos fotos.

I made this cookies for the party.
Hice estas galletas para la fiesta.

And this little cupcakes for the parents, and the big cupcakes for Cosey's school class on Monday.

Y estos pequenos pastelitos para los papas, los pastelitos grandes fueron para la escuela de Cosey el Lunes.

We had a lot of fun. I found the party Idea here. and the cookies her and I learn to do the cookies from here.

Nos divertimos muchisimo. Encontre la idea de la fiesta aqui y las galletas aqui y aprendi a hacer las galletas aqui.

A Birthday Dress

Missy is having a B-day next week and that makes me so busy I will show you the party pictures after all done. For now I want to show you a dress I made for her... She actually likes it. Crazy Girl.

I use what I had in hand so no expend on it. The black fabric is wool, and cotton for the app and ruffles at the bottom. The pattern is a Simplicity 5284.

Mi pequeña cumpleanos la proxima semana y eso me ha mantenido bastante ocupada, luego les enseño fotos despues que termine todo pero por ahora les quiero mostrar un vestido que le hice. Ahora si dijo que le gusto. Locuras de ninos.

Use lo que tenia a la mano asi que no gaste nada en el. La tela negra es Lana y para las aplicaciones y la tira de abajo use algodon. El patron es Simplicity 5284.

A New Pen (Brush) Case

Hi I want to show you a new pen ( brush) case I made yesterday. Tonight I will start a new class at the collage. It is a Watercolor class and I'm so excited I love watercolor and It is going to be my second class in my life the first one was long ago like 20 years ago... so it is not new for me but I really need to recap.

Hola hoy quiero ensenarles una lapicera para mas pinceles y lapices que ayer hice. Esta noche empiezo una nueva clase en la universidad de Acuarelas y estoy super emocionada. Me encantan las acuarelas y esta va a ser mi segunda clase que tomo en mi vida, la primera fue hace 20 anos asi que definitivamente aunque no es nuevo para mi si quiero recordar y aprende nuevas y viejas tecnicas.

I use Ayumi's pattern from here but I change it a little, see I sew the zipper on top just showing everything and I love the idea. I use scraps of colorful fabrics and 100% linen as the base and lining.

Use el patron de Ayumi que esta aqui, pero le cambie algunas cosas y como podran ver el cierre lo cosi por encima nadamas sin esconder nada... me gusto mucho. Use pedazos de telas de diferentes colores y un pedazo de tela 100% lino para la base y el forro. me encanta.
